PGA TOUR
LAST TOURNAMENT: Travelers Championship (Dustin Johnson)
THIS WEEK: Rocket Mortgage Classic, July 2-5
Detroit Golf Club, Detroit (Par 72, 7,340 yards)
Purse: $7.5 million (Winner: $1.35 million)
Defending Champion: Nate Lashley
FedEx Cup leader: Webb Simpson
TV: Thursday-Friday, 3-6 p.m. ET (Golf Channel); Saturday-Sunday, 1-3 p.m. ET (Golf Channel), 3-6 p.m. ET (CBS)
NOTES: The Detroit event is entering its second season on the PGA Tour, having replaced the D.C.-area Quicken Loans National on the schedule. ... The inaugural Rocket Mortgage Classic produced an unlikely winner in Nate Lashley, then a 36-year-old veteran who captured the first PGA Tour title of his career, and prevailed by six strokes. In 17 events since his victory, Lashley has missed the cut eight times -- including in each of his past four outings. ... None of the top five in the world rankings will compete this week, with Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy, Spain's Jon Rahm and the U.S. trio of Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas and Brooks Koepka sitting out. Johnson captured the Travelers Championship by one stroke last week in Cromwell, Conn. ... The highest-rated player in the Detroit field will be No. 6 Webb Simpson, who withdrew from the Travelers Championship after a family member tested positive for coronavirus. However, he reported days later that everyone in his family was back at full health, so he is returning to action. Simpson, the FedEx Cup leader, won the RBC Heritage in Hilton Head Island, S.C., two weeks ago. ... No. 7 Patrick Reed and No. 10 Bryson DeChambeau also will play in the Rocket Mortgage Classic, paired in the first two rounds with No. 23 Hideki Matsuyama of Japan.
BEST BETS: Long-hitting DeChambeau is the favorite heading to the relatively short Detroit Golf Club. "Being able to hit an 8-iron 195 yards is a pretty good asset, I'd say," DeChambeau said Tuesday. "So even though it limits my driving capabilities, my irons are going to be a lot shorter going into the greens no matter what club I have in, yardage I have in." PointsBet and Bet America listed DeChambeau at 600, even though he is winless on the PGA Tour since 2018. ... Simpson, looking for a second victory in as many starts, was second on the board at 1100. ... Reed, playing for the fourth consecutive week, was offered at 1400 by both books. ... South Korea's Sungjae Im, the reigning PGA Tour Rookie of the Year, could be worth a look at 2200.
NEXT WEEK: Workday Charity Open, Dublin, Ohio
