NEW YORK, New York - U.S. stocks ended with minor losses on Tuesday as investors and traders continued to navigate markets with continued nervousness over developments on the trade front.

"Earnings have been pretty good, but this is a market that's just beset by tariff and trade uncertainty and those are really the only catalysts that matter at this point," Ross Mayfield, investment strategist at Baird in Louisville, Kentucky told Reuters Tuesday. "On a day where you're bereft of those (catalysts), it's kind of a wayward market, and we're seeing that today," he said. Following are Tuesday's closing quotes for the key U.S. indices:​

• The Standard and Poor's 500 fell by 9.34 points, or 0.17 percent, closing at 5,396.63.

• The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 155.83 points, or 0.38 percent, ending at 40,368.96.

• The NASDAQ Composite decreased by 8.32 points, or 0.05 percent, to 16,823.17.
